Dead Vlei, Namib-Naukluft National Park, Namibia

Dead Vlei is an old clay pan with dead camelthorn trees some of which are over 500 years old. The trees grew when the clay pan formed after extensive rainfall and the Tsauchab river flooded. Eventually the sands cut off the water to the pan and the trees died. The trees do not decay because of the extreme dryness here and have become blackened by the scorching sun.
